Finally, some professionalism!

There’s been a murder at a secret school for magic and instead of hoping that some plucky 13-year-olds will solve it slowly over the course of the year, it appears that the wizards in the school administration are hiring a detective from the real world to actually figure this out.

At least, that’s what’s happening in Sarah Gailey’s debut novel, just announced by Tor Books!

Editor Miriam Weinberg is super excited about the acquisition:

Did you ever imagine Veronica Mars, but the sisterhood and complexities of loyalty in Practical Magic, and the bitter edge of His Dark Materials? Did you think Broadchurch was amazing but also slightly wish David Tennant’s character was actually suffering from a magical curse instead and not like, a heart condition? Are you the type of reader who wants to be submerged in a tense undercover narrative, but also loves the kind of immersive fantasy world building of Brandon Sanderson? Get excited for this dang debut, then.

Basically, this is book that will capture the hearts and minds of people who love magic above all, but as a close second perhaps to difficult humanity and mystery.

The novel, as yet untitled, is planned for a spring 2019 release.

Before then, prolific-as-heck Sarah Gailey is releasing a duology about the hippo-riding warriors of American history!

Contained within this volume, out on May 23rd of this year, is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of his revenge.

Naturally, revenge takes two parts, so look for A Taste of Marrow in September 2017 for Winslow’s continuing adventures.
