Warner Bros. has shared the first footage from Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve’s (Arrival) follow-up to Ridley Scott’s 1982 film. While some shots immediately—the neon futuristic Los Angeles through which Officer K (Ryan Gosling) walks—evoke the original, we also get the sense that things have changed in the 30 years of in-universe time that have passed: Notably, the world is washed-out and sandy, with a mysterious giant head of a statue that brings to mind Planet of the Apes. Scott serves as executive producer, so it will be interesting to see where the sequel connects to the original and where it diverges.
Officer K is the new blade runner of 2049, but he needs help from his predecessor, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford)… who he finds hiding out in a vintage casino, of all places:
“I did your job once. I was good at it.”
“Things were simpler then.”

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
