George R. R. Martin has redefined epic fantasy for television audiences. Next up? Superheroes.

With Game of Thrones now filming its second-to-last season and HBO beginning the process of defining what a spin-off series could look like, Wild Cards has come to the fore as Martin’s next big television series.

Originally debuting in 1987 from Bantam Books, Wild Cards has grown over the decades into a robust serialized universe, and is George R. R. Martin’s largest series to date. Each new volume, co-edited by Melinda Snodgrass, has featured a star-studded array of new and classic sci-fi/fantasy authors. The latest new volume, High Stakes, came out on August 30, 2016 and is the 23rd installment in the series.

What idea could be so fruitful as to propel a series to such great and varied lengths? Series editors Martin and Snodgrass explain, with some help from authors Max Gladstone and Mary Anne Mohanraj.
