We’re pleased to show off the cover for Foz Meadows’ upcoming novel An Accident of Stars, book one in a new epic fantasy series about an outsider who stumbles into a magical realm on the brink of civil war. An Accident of Stars publishes August 2016 from Angry Robot.

Check out the full cover below, with insights from author Foz Meadows and artist Julie Dillon!

Author Foz Meadows was thrilled with work with Dillon:

“I’ve been a fan of Julie Dillon’s artwork for years, and when An Accident of Stars first went out on submission, I entertained a secret fantasy that I might end up with one of her covers. So when I signed with Angry Robot and was asked if I had anyone in mind as a cover artist, hers was the first and only name that came to mind. I still didn’t expect I’d be that lucky, but to my delight, I was told that Angry Robot had been thinking of Julie, too! Her cover is absolutely gorgeous—I’m delighted with the result, and hope my readers will be, too!”

Artist Julie Dillon was equally excited about the project:

“This project had a very exciting and evocative concept overall. It gave me the opportunity to try to create a grand magical city, which isn’t something I’ve had the chance to do too often. The challenge was in trying to make the piece look dynamic and interesting overall, while showcasing the city clearly and bringing attention to the characters in the foreground. It was a lot of fun to work on!”

From the cover copy for An Accident of Stars:

When Saffron Coulter stumbles through a hole in reality, she finds herself trapped in Kena, a magical realm on the brink of civil war.

There, her fate becomes intertwined with that of three very different women: Zech, the fast-thinking acolyte of a cunning, powerful exile; Viya, the spoiled, runaway consort of the empire-building ruler, Vex Leoden; and Gwen, an Earth-born worldwalker whose greatest regret is putting Leoden on the throne. But Leoden has allies, too, chief among them the Vex’Mara Kadeja, a dangerous ex-priestess who shares his dreams of conquest.

Pursued by Leoden and aided by the Shavaktiin, a secretive order of storytellers and mystics, the rebels flee to Veksh, a neighboring matriarchy ruled by the fearsome Council of Queens. Saffron is out of her world and out of her depth, but the further she travels, the more she finds herself bound to her friends with ties of blood and magic.

Can one girl—an accidental worldwalker—really be the key to saving Kena? Or will she just die trying?
