“A big part of the job is looking for the worst in people,” Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) says of her career as superhero-turned-PI. “Turns out, I excel at that.” Those two lines set up a fantastic first trailer for Marvel and Netflix’s Jessica Jones, presenting the title character’s struggle to create an identity paired with her self-loathing and other demons. Even though Jessica has a small but strong support network in best friend Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) and Luke Cage (Mike Colter), her love interest who doesn’t seem too intimidated by her superpowers, she’s still haunted by the memories of the horrible things that Kilgrave (David Tennant) made her do. And now Kilgrave is back, and sending a message to Jessica.

By message, we mean mind-controlling everyone around her, from Trish to the police force, into maiming or killing themselves to drive her insane. Seriously, this series looks so good. You can see echoes of Jessica’s frustration and alienation from the first few issues of Alias, while the series seems to be setting up a season-long cat-and-mouse game between Kilgrave and Jessica. Watch the trailer!

Jessica Jones premieres Friday, November 20 on Netflix.
