The good news: George R.R. Martin survives the zombie apocalypse. The bad news: …Nope, only good news, because he’s still writing A Song of Ice and Fire!
Martin has no problem poking fun at himself, like when he got decapitated by a flying shark in Syfy’s Sharknado 3 earlier this summer. Now, he’s filmed another cheeky cameo for the network, in the second season of their zombie television series Z Nation. And this time he lives! Sort of.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the author plays a zombified version of himself, captured by a character called the Collector. True to his name, the Collector acquires celebrity zombies and makes them do his bidding. In Martin’s case, it was clearly to finish ASOIAF—as you can see, he’s showing off not the long-awaited The Winds of Winter, but A Promise of Spring, which must be a play on the planned seventh and final book, A Dream of Spring. Though considering that he has some trouble signing his own autograph (in other photos), it will be interesting to see how much of the book’s text is just “BRAAAINS” written over and over.
Inlander points out that the series shoots in Spokane, Washington, so it’s likely that Martin filmed his cameo while in the area attending Worldcon/Sasquan recently. Of the cameo, Martin told EW, “I just want to prove to my fans that even in the Zombie Apocalypse, the Song of Ice and Fire books will still come out!”
