Behold, the Will Staehle cover for Adam Christopher’s scifi noir thriller Made to Kill! We are particularly excited about this title here at Tor.com, as Adam Christopher came up with the idea for the novel while taking one of our “Pop Quiz” author interviews. What started as a passing notion—what would a science fiction story written by Raymond Chandler look like—became a novelette, and now a series of novels.

Made to Kill will be out in November and follows Ray, the world’s only robot detective, and the Electromagnetic Detective Agency.

Will Staehle is no stranger to Adam Christopher—he’s designed covers for both Christopher’s Empire State and Spider War series. For a brief moment I thought about comissioning someone else on this series, just for the change… but, really, what topic could be more perfect for Will than sci-fi noir? A fan of Christopher’s work, himself, Will was only to happy to oblige. Below are some of the alternate versions he came up with. All of them are really good but I think the one above is the clear winner for this title.

Charmingly, Will said, “I was a little nervous about sending over a ‘painted’ cover by a lowly-design guy, as you work with these world-famous painters.” What he came up with is a pitch-perfect homage to the original Chandler covers of the thirties and forties while still looking cool and fresh. Thanks again, Will. I really can’t wait for the next book in the series!
