Doctor Who may be returning to the airwaves on August 23, but the BBC won’t be the only place for fans to follow the Twelfth Doctor’s escapades through time and space. In October, Puffin will release its ebook anthology Doctor Who: 12 Doctors, 12 Stories—and now we know who’s penning the latest adventure!
After Twitter rumors had previously pointed to Frank Cottrell Boyce and J.K. Rowling, The Guardian reveals that The Coldest Girl in Coldtown author Holly Black will be the one to take on Peter Capaldi’s Twelve in a new short story, called “Lights Out.”
Until now, Black’s novels and short stories have tended more toward fantasy and horror, including faeries, vampires, and dark magic. It’ll be exciting to see her play in the sci-fi realm. She told The Guardian:
It’s a huge honor to get to write a story in such an amazing science fiction universe, one which makes for an ultimate writer’s playground with it’s flexibility across time and space. I am a big fan of the series and of the Doctor himself, our alien hero who reminds us over and over of our humanity and carries a screwdriver instead of a gun.
Black joins an esteemed list of writers who’ve gotten to jump into the TARDIS with the Doctor’s prior incarnations: Neil Gaiman, Patrick Ness, Richelle Mead, Malorie Blackman, Eoin Colfer, Marcus Sedgwick, Michael Stott, Philip Reeve, Alex Scarrow, Derek Landy, and Charlie Higson.
Doctor Who: 12 Doctors, 12 Stories will be available in print on October 23.
