Tor UK is about to reissue Brandon Sanderson’s The Rithmatist—and you can see the full stunning cover art for the ebook below.

In the book, Joel studies in a school attended by his country’s best magic users. But he doesn’t have the gift – and that’s got to hurt, hasn’t it?! The magic is based on geometry, its users drawing powerful workings in chalk, and Joel would do anything to have it. That’s even when some of the most promising students start disappearing in suspicious circumstances. Soon it’s clear their gift could cost them their lives—unless Joel and his professor can unravel this crime and stop yet more murders taking place.

This wonderful novel is great for adult and YA fantasy fans—and I adored it. It was also a New York Times bestseller in hardback, has attracted a slew of top reviews (see below) and is a perfect example of the storytelling genius that is Brandon Sanderson. Read, enjoy and I hope you thrill at the high points just as much as I did—I was glued to the page. Which can be embarrassing on public transport, especially when you’re reading electronically… yep, time for me to get another coffee!

From the book’s catalog description:

In a school for the magically gifted, your talent could cost you your life…

Young student Joel is fascinated by the magic of Rithmatics, but few have the gift and he is not one of them. Undaunted, Joel persuades Professor Fitch to teach him about this geometric magic. For although Joel can’t infuse his protective lines and circles with power, or bring his chalk-drawn creatures to life, he can really understand how it works. However, a daunting test lies ahead, when someone starts kidnapping top Rithmatic students at his school, Armedius Academy.

Since he’s not a magic user, Joel appears to be safe and he’s desperate to investigate and prove himself. Then people start dying – but can Joel really stop a killer alone? He’ll need the help of Rithmatist apprentice Melody, as even more students disappear. Together, they must race to find clues before the killer notices them—and takes them out too.

The book features illustrations by Ben McSweeney, which depict the magical elements of the novel with great elegance and insight.

We are reissuing the ebook on 22nd May, with the paperback reissue following in March next year, and the cover was designed by our head of design James Annal with design agency Crush. Watch this space for news of the all-new sequel too! To find out more about the story, you can view an evocative trailer for the book. The prologue and first five chapters are here at Tor.com.
