Steampunks are a-gathering as the tail-end of the winter season arrives (and it’s still appropriate to wear all those layers!) Among other things this March, stop in for a pub quiz at The Way Station, celebrate Steampunk Ottawa’s 3rd anniversary, or have a picnic or three! Kevin Steil of Airship Ambassador and additional guest Nancy Overbury of Overbury Ink are joining me to recommend the latest goings-on in the steampunk world.
Remember, folks, you can have your steampunk or steam-relevant event spotlighted here by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org with the details. The deadline for featuring your favorite events for the month of April is March 18th, 2012. If we missed out on your event for this month, though, drop a shout-out in the comments below.
Now onto all the things!

From the museum website: “If you’re railroad magnate Henry Bradley Plant, in the midst of the sand swamps that would be Tampa, you construct the most astonishingly magnificent hotel of its day, then fill it with treasures from around the world.
With its splendid Moorish architecture, opulent furnishings, and spectacular tropical gardens, Plant’s Tampa Bay Hotel attracted a host of celebrated guests, from Teddy Roosevelt to Sarah Bernhardt to Babe Ruth.” Join the Tampa Bay steampunks for a picnic in the park.
The Nightmare Machine – March 30 – April 1, 2012 – Jefferson, TX
“Texas seems like a veritable steampunk hotspot at the moment, with all kinds of smaller events. As a fan and writer of ghost stories and the paranormal, I thought this event in Jefferson has appeal.” Organized by Steampunk Illumination Society, and hosted by Marquis of Vaudeville, The Nightmare Machine will be delving into the world of paranormal and Steampunk together in one hauntingly spectacular event. Join in this one-of-a-kind convention that doesn’t aim to take over a single building, but an entire city that is known for its ghostly inhabitants and spectacular haunts. Guests include Airship Isabella, The Cast of The Mechanical Grave, and S.S. Kali’s Hourglass. Events include ghost tours, spooky readings by some excellent authors, D&D style games, street performances, scavenger hunts, and a few other little surprises.
AnomalyCon – March 23-25, 2012 – Denver, CO
“May I say the only “Mile High” steampunk event of the year?” says Nancy. “With my recent return from this warm city nestled in the Colorado Rockies, I would be back in a minute to enjoy its kind hospitality and fabulous views.” The con includes the Golden Cog Awards for creative costumers and the musical and written talents of the Special Guests: Unwoman, Terry Kroenung, Veronique Chevalier, O.M. Grey, JoSelle Vanderhoof, BB Blackdog, London Homer-Wambeam, Genevieve Valentine.
Kevin also adds: “Also, two films will be screened at the convention. The Astronomer by London Homer-Wambeam, the sixteen year old creator of Petrifying Productions, is a remake of George Méliès’ 1902 film Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon). The Wars of Other Men by Mike Zawacki takes place at the tail end of the steampunk area in the once-powerful Detroit, which has become both battleground and tactical objective in a long-running conflict.”
“Celebrating its 3rd year together, Steampunk Ottawa is gathering at the Firkin & Knight for an evening of camaraderie, costuming and cake. In this newly renovated pub with old world charm, nestled in the nation’s capital you will receive the warmest welcome and meet the most splendid people.”
Steampunk Night @ Alamo Drafthouse Park North March 8, 2012 – San Antonio, TX. According to their Facebook: “The San Antonio Neo-Victorian Association is ever so proud to present Steampunk Night at the Alamo Drafthouse Park North! Join us, Steampunk or not, for this magical evening of wonder and bedazzlement which we host every second Thursday of the every month with a new Steampunk visual experience! With Steampunks from all over the Texas community showing up (dressing up encouraged!) and the film itself, it would almost be an absolute crime to miss out on what promises to be an amazing evening! Our film for this evening is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a wild romp through a world where fiction is reality and the Victorian Era’s greatest characters team up to fight off a sinister threat.”
