SFSignal has posted up an amazing infographic charting out horror films from the past century in terms of box office revenue, critical reception, and budget. What results is a fascinating timeline of what really scares us en masse, how much, and when.

In the 1970s? Unseen massive evil (The Exorcist, The Omen) lurking just below the surface (Jaws) topped our nightmares. As the 80s died off, it was dapper, cerebral humans (The Silence of the Lambs), and as the 90s matured it was narcissistic teenagers (Scream, The Blair Witch Project) and suburbia in general (The Sixth Sense) that terrified us.
