Two years ago, Tor.com kicked off the Star Trek Rewatch, an episode by episode rewatch that looked at the original 1960s science fiction series with a keen eye towards fishing out the early elements that we’ve since come to deeply identify with Star Trek, both as a show and as a phenomenon.

Eugene Myers and Torie Atkinson kicked off the Rewatch in April 2009 with great humor and enthusiasm, bringing us through the first and second seasons, shaky starts, newfound grooves, and all. (And who could forget Tribbles Week?) In October 2010, Star Trek novelists Dayton Ward and David Mack took up the torch, resolutely navigating us through Star Trek’s final third season and reminding us of the very elements we still loved from a show that now seemed insistent on falling apart.

Through it all, the sense of appreciation never wavered, and it’s in that spirit that we’re kicking off a Star Trek movie marathon!

This week, we’ll be watching (and appreciating) the films featuring the original cast, from The Motion Picture to Generations, with a great mix of folks, from Tor.com staffers, to Star Trek novelists, and more.

We’ll be hearing from Nicholas Meyer about the creation of Wrath of Khan, Dayton and David return to tackle the first of the odd-numbered films, A.C. Crispin reveals how the events of The Undiscovered Country continued to play out after the movie ended, and we offer a defense of perhaps the most reviled Star Trek movies ever.

And that’s not all! We’ll be posting special essays, fun movie-specific giveaways, and more.

Kick off the movie marathon fun right now with Dayton Ward’s appreciation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Stubby the Rocket is the mascot of Tor.com and often feels as beloved by its crew as the original cast loved the Enterprise.
