Tor.com Weekly Newsletter Special Edition

Welcome to a special sneak peek edition of the Tor.com weekly newsletter! Normally this goes out to our registered users via email, but now’s the chance for everyone to see what they’re missing. If you’re into the idea of getting site highlights once a week, personally handcrafted by my personal self, occasionally featuring Gilbert and Sullivan parodies or kitten pictures, just register for the site.

Among Others is Among Us

Among Others, the newest novel from Tor.com super-blogger Jo Walton*, is the story of how one smart, odd young woman solves a fantastical problem by thinking science-fictionally. It’s an outsider tale and a coming of age story; Patrick Nielsen Hayden calls it “absolutely incandescent” and a whole load of other nice things besides, Elizabeth Bear compares it to Pamela Dean’s Tam Lin, and you, dear reader, can decide for yourself when you read our substantial excerpt. Congratulations to Jo on the release of an awesome book!

* How super is Jo? So super she recently celebrated her 500th post!

Kai Su, Stargate?

Everything old is new again in science fiction! In this post, the first in a series on SF and its classical sources, Liz Bourke discusses the Greeks’ obsession with a lost island called Atlantis, and covers a few modern works that call Atlantis out by name or use its mystique as inspiration.
