When one looks in the box, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the cat.

Reactor

Following the announcement that he had joined the cast, it has been confirmed that Welsh actor Rhys Ifans is playing The Lizard, villainous alter-ego of Dr. Curt Connors, in the new Spider-Man movie, which is scheduled to start production in December.

Ifans joins Emma Stone, who will be playing Gwen Stacy (not, as some dummy reported, Mary-Jane Watson) and Andrew Garfield, the title web slinger. The Ifans announcement also contained the tangential information that Venom will not, contrary to rumor, be appearing in the new movie, thus sparing Garfield some of the embarrassment suffered by his predecessor, Tobey Maguire, in Spider-Man 3.

It’s early yet, but I will confess to an increasing sense of optimism for this “reboot,” which has supplanted the initial eye-roll and query, “Is this really necessary?” The cast and director, Marc Webb, are largely newcomers to the comic book movie genre but have shown promise. Will that promise translate to success with Spidey? Time will tell.
