Robert Downey, Jr. has some very fanboy-friendly thoughts on the upcoming Avengers movie and why he has also signed on to portray Tony Stark in that movie, in addition to Iron Man 2, over on MTV’s Splashpage blog:

“If we don’t get it right it’s really, really going to suck,” said Downey. “It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel’s best and brightest because it’s the hardest thing to get right. It’s tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters.”

He gets it. He really does. It’s good to see that the franchise seems to be in such great hands. I’ve always maintained that one of the smartest things that Marvel has done is to start their own movie studio—despite the initial risk of bankrolling and producing their own movies, this is the only way to make sure that their characters are translated onto the screen in a faithful, high-quality way, which translates into bigger successes at the box-office. After all, if there is a fickle movie audience, it’s the fanboy contingent.

This isn’t to say that Marvel Studios hasn’t had its flops (Bruce Banner, I’m looking at you, and Reed Richards and company aren’t too far behind), but if you compare recent Marvel Studios offerings to the Marvel-based movies of the past, like, say, Dolph Lundgren’s Punisher, el Capitán América versus la Calavera Roja, or Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four train wreck, I think it’s safe to say that Marvel’s “if you want a job done right, do it yourself” attitude has paid off rather well.
